Micropropagation
is a preferred propagation method used on a wide variety of crops.
Rapid multiplication of disease free and/or new, high value plants
has made tissue culture (micropropagation) a vital component of the
agricultural, forestry, and pharmaceutical industries for production
and research. High labor and facility costs, however, place constraints
on the profitability of plant tissue culture. Efficient, industrial-type
systems are necessary to replace traditional laboratory methods to
assure commercial success. Moreover, when a viable commercial system
is implemented, many other crops will be produced using tissue culture
technology.
Tissue cultured crops are usually placed on agar-gelled medium so
the tissue has access to nutrients while shoots and leaves develop
in air. Agar costs more than all other media components combined.
Moreover, tissue must be transferred frequently to vessels with fresh
media since agar will limit diffusion of nutrients as cultures grow
older. Agar can also trap deleterious plant produced toxins too close
to the growing tissue. Manipulation of the environment of tissue cultured
plants is not accommodated within traditional vessels.
Southern Sun's Liquid Lab™ systems allow bench-scale in vitro
procedures involving plants, media, environment and information, to
be flexibly designed and predictably executed throughout the entire
process. This is based on years of observations that micropropaules
experience growth and handling limitation in agar (Young et al. 1991).
Bioreactors and vessels, tools, workstations, information systems,
packaging systems, downstream shipping and delivery all are integrated
in an advanced Liquid Lab™ System that can be tailored for needs
of specific crop. Southern Sun’s Liquid Lab™ Products
are an array of tools, both patented and proprietary, to resolve readily
many of the current challenges facing producers of high-value plant
products. In addition, we design our systems for robust application
scenarios involving a wide range of labor and environmental variables.

Southern Sun BioSystems (SoSun) licenses technology, protocol,
process, materials and equipment for plant propagation. SoSun
technology delivers unprecedented environmental control to plants
that produce increased quality at reduced cost.
The application of this technology is for medicinal, food, timber,
ornamental, and research crops. The packaging and delivery systems
provide the industrial scale up and precision necessary to efficiently
capture solar energy to yield chemical energy – food, fiber,
and fuel.
SoSun’s equipment and materials provides the technology necessary
to bridge the gap between agriculture and the promise of agri-biotechnology.
